Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS)

The Restore Clinic is proud to be the only private and community based service to have a SOZO Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) machine in North Queensland!

What is Bioimpedance Spectroscopy?

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy is a non-invasive technology that can measure total body water, extracellular and intracellular fluid volumes accurately.

This essentially means that BIS can monitor changes in fluid volumes and capture a picture of what the body looks like on the inside.

How does Bioimpedance Spectroscopy work?

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy works by sending a painless electrical current through the body and measuring the resistance. This is completed by standing on the machine with your palms on the pads and feet in place. W

ithin your body muscle, fat and bone all have different levels of conductivity. This means that when the current passes through they will have different levels of resistance allowing us to accurately detect the percentage of total body water, extracellular and intracellular fluid volumes.

How accurate is Bioimpedance Spectroscopy?

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy can detect fluid changes as low as 36ml in a limb, this equates to 2.4 tablespoons of fluid.

How can this help people with lymphoedema?

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy can be used as a reliable and accurate tool for documenting presence of lymphoedema.

BIS is quick to administer and can be completed with great accuracy it allows for smaller changes in lymphoedema to be detected vs a conventional measurement with a measuring tape. Lymphoedema is best managed when detected early and BIS allows us to detect clinically relevant lymphoedema at an early stage.

It is recommended that a Bioimpedance Spectroscopy measurement is taken every 3 months for the first 2 years post cancer diagnosis.

Evidence has shown that early detection in the subclinical stage (before obvious symptoms develop) provides the best outcome for patients. The Restore Clinic aims to establish a prospective surveillance model of care for all cancer patients living with the risk of lymphoedema progression.

Part of this program involves complementary screening with bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) every 3 months over the first 2 years following diagnosis. A baseline measurement as early as possible to your diagnosis is advised.

Please contact our clinic to arrange a time for this at your earliest convenience. It is pain free and only takes a few minutes.
